The arrival of Dumbfoundead: Koreatown rapper’s ‘Are We There Yet?’ video racks up the views
The media would prefer to explain phenomena for you. We live in a click/view vortex where 24-hour viruses like Kreayshawn (video contains profanity) will always be inherently more marketable than someone like Koreatown’s Dumbfoundead. Mickey Mouse ears always give you an advantage, especially when you’re a 21-year-old female white rapper bragging about how much swag your ovaries have. So while you’ve probably read a half-dozen national think pieces about Oakland’s Kreayshawn, a rapper with one song, you’ve probably never heard of Dumbfoundead. After all, his success came the old-fashioned (read: slow) way. He started rapping like rappers used to. He rapped against rappers to get good at rapping. So if it took him a decade of to make a viral YouTube smash, that’s fine. He used that gestation period to develop a rabid and extensive fan base that even some major label rappers would envy. Nearly 60,000 Facebook friends, YouTube videos that regularly tread well into six figures in viewings, and tour dates all across the globe. He’s been able to amass fans on the Grind Time Battle League circuit, but he’s also cultivated a groundswell of support from the local and national Asian American communities, and just regular rap fans. Proudly Korean American but never resorting to cheap flag-waving tactics, he’s opted to rely on a slick creative flow and strong storytelling skill. Plus, the Project Blowed pedigree never hurts. It’s the rare song that steps outside of itself and thoughtfully considers the artist’s station. We’re used to hearing underground rappers complain about the life they want, but Dumbfoundead’s smart enough to take a breath and realize that by making a living off of his music, he’s made it. It’s nice to know that some things are immutable: A rapper can hone his craft in the shadows and rely on old-school qualities and personal anecdotes to create a song that resonates with mass audiences. The next time a major label tries to a force a gifted, formerly underground rapper into some embarrassing trend-hopping Skylar Grey submission, they’d be well served to study a song like this.
Finally Famous :)
“Sometimes I dream bigger than I live…” - Big Sean
Summer is about to pass :) Wow, what a great summer this was. 2011 has been a good year to me - kind of like a cherry-on-top to my most epic year that is 2010. A lot of ups and downs, but I’ve worked hard, gritted my teeth, and pushed through to make it to the top. And I don’t want to ever leave this place.
One of the albums that I listened to the most this summer was Big Sean’s “Finally Famous.” A big part of the reason I started listening to it was because of my cousin/clone Abram. We listened to it and quoted it all throughout our camping trip this summer, and it definitely made it a summer to remember. I’ve always heard that music is like a time capsule. I love music that captures memorable moments in time, and every time you hear a particular song, it has the potential to bring you back to that moment - even if you listen to it years later.
However, this post is not about Finally Famous, the album. This post is about the concept of Finally Famous. Abram told me that he watched an interview of Big Sean, and Sean explained that this album wasn’t only about attaining “celebrity” fame - but it was also meant to inspire normal people with normal goals. Not bad for a guy as shallow and superficial as Big Sean (but hey, the music sounds great). If a dentist wanted to get into dental school, then to be ‘Finally Famous’ would be to ‘finally get in.’ And that’s exactly how I feel now that I’ve gotten into and already started optometry school. This is something that I’ve wanted for a long time, and it’s finally here. All the studying, late nights, sacrifice, hard work, tears, pep talks, writing essays, networking, driving long distances, sending e-mails, shadowing, working at the practice, managing clubs, and all the little things - it was ALL worth it. Here I am now, in optometry school, and on my way to becoming an eye doctor.
I finally had some time to reflect on my first couple of weeks here in optometry school, and boy, there is a lot to cover! For now, I won’t go into great detail, but I think this past Friday I just had pretty much sums up the best of my short time here so far.
9:30 AM - Finally had my interview with my recruiting Sgt. for the Air Force scholarship. It was intense! What an experience…but I know this will be the first of many! Finished up at 10:58, right before I had to run as fast as I could to my first class of the day! Got dressed up, slacks and a tie for this one too :)
11:00 AM - Made it to class! This was CIBS discussion and I was note-taker today, so I was a little bit more involved this time around. Felt good! Discussion was great, and my classmates are all really smart - I’m still amazed that I am now peers with so many smart and talented people! Although the write-ups for this course suck the life out of you, I actually feel like a doctor studying and picking a part these case studies, trying to find a diagnosis!
1:00 PM - Lunchtime! My favorite part of each day! I don’t know why, but I love taking a break in the middle of the day, going home, and making myself a nice sandwich. French roll, lettuce, tomatoes, sliced swiss cheese, and black forest ham! (peace out Subway! no more taking my money!) Chill back, eat my sangwich, and watch a lil TV!
2:00 PM - Back to class. I ain’t a slacker, but sitting in the backseat is way too fun to pass up! I sit in the back of the lecture hall because some of the 4th years told me it was the best seat in the class since you have the speaker right above you and you can still see everything. Plus, you have more privacy, room to relax, and not worry about the prof. seeing you goof off lol. But yeah, I got a good group of guys that I sit with in the back! We joke around, have a good time, make smart-ass remarks, but we still get shit done! We all learn from each other too! No egos!
4:00 PM - First meeting as Vice Prez! I forgot to mention this, but I won the election for Vice President of the class! Right after class, I had to run over to the student lounge for my first meeting with the previous class cabinet. There was a lot of details to go over, and I hope I’m not in over my head! Now that I have this position, I’m going to be busier than ever - let’s work hard, I know I can do this!! Fundraising sounds simple, but there’s more to it than meets the eye (pun intended). I hope I can learn and adopt new skills from this new experience I will obtain as VP.
5:00 PM - Scholarship Ceremony! This was a great way to end my day at school! I was invited to attend the scholarship ceremony at school because I wrote an essay and applied for a scholarship and apparently I won! Great news for me and my family! I was one of the first people to be announced since they went in order from 1st years to 4th years, so I was excited to hear my name be announced! Felt like the Grammys! I walked down the stairs , in my tie, accepted my award, and took a picture with a few of the doctors and scholarship committee members! What a great experience and I feel blessed to receive such an award! The money will definitely help me out with school!
7:00 PM - Basketball! No better way to end a great day, and week, by playing some ball! Went down to the now legendary Brea Junior High Park to play ball until the lights turn off (everyday at 10PM). This has pretty much been routine, as a really good group of us guys (1st, 2nd, and 3rd yrs.) have been coming to play every week since school started. It’s a great way to release stress, and plus, basketball was always my first love!! Now that I don’t dance as much, I’m glad basketball has found it’s way back into my life at a higher level. I’ve been playing really well on the courts out here, and I’m glad I have improved my game drastically!
10:00 PM - Relax back at home :) Finally made it home - but the day’s still not over! Had some time relax after gettin Rigoberto’s burritos, sit on the couch, and watch a movie with my two closest friends so far in optometry school. I’m glad I was able to keep in touch with these guys since we met during our interview! We all made it! Fittingly enough, we watched “Hitch,” one of my favorite movies, and a favorite shared by all of us.
12:00 AM - Finally finished the entire movie (funny that we actually watched the whole thing lol that never happens). Great way to the end the day. But, of course, gotta do one last thing, call bbh :) After a couple of I love you’s, I miss you’s, and good nights, that was the end of one of the best normal days of my life :) *knocked out on bed* yesssss!
one of the best music videos i’ve seen
